New DepEd Education System - K+12, Grading and Mother Tongue for 2012

New DepEd Education System for School Year 2012-2013

Department of Education (DepEd) will implement the following new Education System for school year 2012 - 2013.

1. DepEd K+12 Curriculum - There are 3 countries left in the world having a 10 year duration for Elementary and Secondary Education and one of them is Philippines and the rest is in Africa. DepEd will implement K+12 basic education curriculum to improve education system starting this school year 2012-2013. K+12 means Kinder plus 12 years Elementary and Secondary Education.

Objectives of K+12 Curriculum

a. Giving students more time to master competencies and skills and relevant to Job market.
b. Preparation for Higher Education, earn higher wages and you can even put up your own business.
c. Accelerate growth of our economy and solid foundation for long term Socio-Economic development.
d. Philippine Education will be at level of International Standards.

K+12 Drawback or Negative Effects on Colleges

With full implementation of DepEd K+12 , it will create a "vacuum" for 2 years. A "vacuum" is the absence of graduating High School.

a. Two years without High School graduate thus, lesser or zero enrolment for incoming freshman and sophomore for Colleges.
b. Possible Colleges layoff and unemployment for 2 years period.


2. Use of Native Language - Extensive research shows that teaching students with lectures using Native Language or Mother Tongue is very effective as well as effective on learning their second (Filipino), third (English), fourth and even other languages. Mother tongue will be used in teaching Science, Math, MAPEH, Araling Panlipunan and  Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao from Kindergarten to Grade 3.


3. New Grading System - If you saw your grade in report card last school year with 90% average, this time it will be different, it will be an "A" meaning Advanced. DepEd will now use level of proficiency in grading system abbreviated below.

A - Advanced (grade of 90% and above)
P - Proficient (85%-89%)
AP - Approaching Proficiency (80%-84%)
D - Developing (75%-79%)
B - Beginning (74% and below)
