NASA Voyager 1 - First Man-Made Object at the Edge of Solar System

A 39 years old NASA Voyager 1 probe at the edge of Solar System as of June 2013

Voyager 1 is launched by NASA on September 7, 1977 to study the outer Solar System and Interstellar Medium and is about to become the first man-made object to cross  the boundary of Solar System into Interstellar space.

It is currently at 18 billion km from SUN as of June 2013 and the farthest man-made object from our planet. It is currently travelling on unknown region of space - unclear if still on area of Solar System or Interstellar space.

NASA's Team of Voyager 1 says it has not reached on Interstellar space because it's still on the domain of Sun's magnetic field. They estimate, it could take several months or even years to get there.

1. Golden Record - it carries a gold plated audio-visual disc (phonograph records) in the event the spacecraft is found by intelligent life-forms. The disc carries photos of Earth and its life forms, scientific information, greetings from people (read message below) and music.

"This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours" -US President Jimmy Carter-.

2. 11 scientific instruments to study celestial objects as it travels through space. Digital recorder that can record up to 62,500 kilobytes of data.

3. Spacecraft instruments, Communication system and Nuclear Generator

Of the eleven instruments carried by Voyager 1, 5 of them are still working and continue to send back data to Earth. It will have enough power for instruments until 2025.
