My fourteen month old (just out of warranty) Samsung Galaxy S5 developed a major screen flickerng/flashing problem that coincided with its first exposure to cold weather this year AND an OTA update on the same day. Initially, it only flashed when in (or having just come in from) the cold, and ONLY when going to sleep. Within a day or two it flickered/flashed continuously when cold or having just come in from the cold (and occasionally when going to sleep regardless of temperature). That progressed to occasional, though noticeable, flickering (not the wild flashing as seen when cold or about to sleep) in any temperature (mostly noticeable with white backgrounds). At that point it also occasionally became unresponsive to the power and home buttons, with either one needing to be pushed several times before the screen would come on.
Though the cold/sleep flashing seems to occur in any lighting situation, the flickering in general seems to be limited to dim light situations AND with the brightness set to automatic and/or lower than 50%. If I turn the brightness up (or uncheck auto brightness, which usually causes the brightness to increase automatically), I'm not inclined to see screen flickering.
I've tried replacing the battery, changing the display settings (from adapted to standard), disabled auto adjust screen tone, disabled hardware overlay, wiped the cache, even did a factory reset, all to no avail (in fact it's getting worse). I am at the point of having to make a Sophie's Choice and either pay for a pricey screen replacement that may not work if it's a motherboard issue, or just pay the remainder of what I owe on the device (essentially dropping a hundred plus bucks on a brick) and getting a replacement. Either way sucks. Grrr... Suggestions/advice appreciated. 😉
UPDATE: The device eventually underwent an expensive screen/digitizer replacement which completely resolved the problem. (Not sure if this is true or not but I had a technician state that the GREEN flickering indicated a bad screen and the replacement DID fix the problem.) However, I recommend you do the repair yourself to save money and assure a quality job. ;) (see pinned comment)
